Bubblesnakes Tuesdays

This coming Tuesday, July 16th we will be doing something different at Kickball! Yay for fun novelty!
Emily, (mama to Ocean and Forrest) has volunteered to help the kids make Bubblesnakes! Much like these ones here.
She asks that everyone please bring a plastic water bottle with the end cut off and and old sock to slip on the bottle. Thick socks work better than thin socks, she says.
I'm personally really excited, as we've never done this before! Thanks Emily for volunteering your time, energy, and care for our keiki! See you all Tuesday at 10am at Keaau Shipman Park.

Kickball Tuesday Revival

Aloha friends!
It's been awhile since I've posted about kickball meetups! This is probably because I put up the summer schedule , which seemed  good enough, but now I'm thinking we need a reminder revival! I was also thinking we might even need a Tuesday-game revival!

  • (revival--an instance of something becoming popular, active, or important again. ------Websters online Dictionary)

We've been playing kickball every week since January 22, 2013, which makes an amazing 6 months of  super-Tuesday kickball! Yaya!
Is anyone sick of it yet?
 Anyone?
The keiki don't seem to be! Plus more and more kids keep on coming! However, I feel we could use something novel to keep our motivation going...or at least mine..... haha.
Let me know if you would like to take over any one of these Tuesday dates below. You could volunteer to run any sports, games or activities of your choice. We will be there to support you in your efforts as you share your talents with our homeschool community.
The kickball games have been about 45 mins to an hour, with the rest of the time for free play, eating lunch, and hanging out, just to give you an idea of what we've been doing.
July   23, 30
Aug 6, 20, 27

Mahalo! Let me know what dates you'd like to take! All others will be...kickball!
One of my favorite pictures from kickball last week. Thank you Tony Valadon for taking shots of the kids!

Aloha Bluegrass Meet n' Greet, June 7th

An exciting and wonderful musical opportunity is coming to the East side of the Big island! We would like to share the details plus get an idea for who would be interested in attending!
Rion Schmidt and Katy Rexford of the Aloha Blue-Grass Duo will be putting on a free Meet & Greet activity, which will expose our keiki to a variety of musical instruments such as fiddles, violins, banjos, guitars, bass, and mandolins. Rion and Katy will play a few songs, introduce various instruments, plus talk about the types of programs and lessons they offer.  All families are welcome to attend!

For families looking to get their children into musical lessons, this is great opportunity to get exposed to what's out there. Katy and Rion take on  students of all ages and abilities, from complete beginner to advanced. For those interested in scheduling lessons, their normal rate is $50/hour or $25/half hour.

The Meet & Greet will be happening on Friday June 7th, at 4:00pm at the Hawaiian Acres Community Center. Map here.    If this is something you'd be interested in attending, please email Barbara at b2russell@hotmail.com for any questions or to schedule lessons with Rion and Katy.
(If for any reason you can't make it to the Meet & Greet on the 7th, please feel free to email Barbara to arrange another time to meet up.)

Check out Rion and Katy's video "Sourdough" below:

Rion and Katy's Bios:

Katy Rexford and Rion Schmidt - the Aloha Bluegrass Duo - have been playing and teaching music each for over a dozen years, and have been teaching in the Hawaiian islands for three and eight years, respectively.  Each spring, their mainland-based Aloha Bluegrass Band members join them for a tour of the islands of Hawai'i, Oahu, and Maui, where they teach several week-long bluegrass and Hawaiian music workshops to keiki and adults and perform throughout the islands.

Katy grew up in eastern North Carolina and began playing the violin at age eight. She also played her first fiddle tune that year, beginning a lifelong journey of traditional music exploration, including old time, bluegrass, country blues, Hawaiian, Irish, Cajun, and more.   Based in San Francisco from 2000-2012, Katy has performed and toured with myriad artists including Peter Rowan, Boz Scaggs, Michelle Shocked, Del Williams, Poor Man's Whiskey, and more.  She now directs the Aloha Music Academy and teaches at a number of bluegrass and folk music camps in Alaska, Hawaii, and the lower 48. Katy has been teaching music for ten years, and teaching music in Hawaii for three.

Rion Schmidt was born and raised Alaska, playing and singing bluegrass and folk music with his father and sister since he was a young boy.  Rion's banjo style reflects the mountain music of Alaska and the Northwest.  A multi-instrumentalist and singer, Rion has been teaching music for 13 years, co-directing the Aloha Music Academy for two, and has instructed music camps for kids and adults in Alaska, Inuvik (Northern Territory Canada), and Hawaii.  He has collaborated with Hawaiian musicians on Maui for eight years, and shares the Hawaiian people's interest in preserving traditional music styles and values.

Kickball April 30th and a Healthy Dose of Laughter

Come one and all for homeschool kickball tomorrow at Kea'au Shipman Park! We'll be meeting as usual at 10am for the kickball game, then of course  feel free to hang out afterwards for free play and socialization!
Kickball Rules are here.

One happy homeschool parent mentioned to me several weeks ago how refreshing it is to come to kickball and laugh! It's true- there is a lot of laughter and smiles at kickball. The feeling among the kids and among the parents that participate is joyful, lighthearted, and positive. There isn't any pressure for the kids to perform or compete on the field. The older kids are patient and understanding with the littler ones. The ones who have played 50 times are patient and helpful to the ones who are just starting out. The kids get along. The parents cheer them on and lend a hand where needed. This is a good group of people that I feel blessed to associate with.
I am looking forward to kickball tomorrow so I  laugh and feel the positive energy from all of you.

See you tomorrow friends!
